Essay on Japanese Education

Essay or Presentation Format
(エッセイやプレゼンの形式)

1. Say what you’re going to say.
2. Say it.
3. Say what you’ve said.

1. General (一般論)
2. Specific(具体例)
3. General (一般論)

Introduction- Thesis statement (序論)

Body I- Current situation. (現状)

Body II- Argument (こうするべきだ)
だめな部分だけじゃなくて、こうするべきだというポジティブ

Conclusion (結論)
Wider meaning of the thesis given Body I and Body II.
Body I and Body II をふまえて、序論より広い意味での論文の意義。

Thesis: Japan education should make students think more.
“think more” is good… but what should they think more about? “independent thinking” makes that more obvious.

>> REVISED: Japanese education should encourage independent thinking.

Introduction:

Japanese education should encourage independent thinking. Current education leads to students who are copycats, too uniform, and over-dependent. This must change.

Body I- Current situation
Three keywords, "copycat" "uniform" "dependent" relate this.

Firstly, almost everyone copies other people’s ideas. Instead they should think themselves.

Second, they decide what to do and what to say by other people’s opinions. Instead they should make different opinions because they are different people.

Third, students are dependent on other people too much. For example, their friends and teachers. Instead, they should think by themselves.

Body II- What should they do instead? Why?

Japan should make students think more because they are unique and they should have different opinion.

Why? What are the reasons?
社会になんらかのアイデアを出すとき、みな同じだと、同じアイデアで固まってしまう。

批判がなければ、悪いアイデアもそのまま通ってしまう。

If students are the same, when they think they have an idea, those are the same too.

>>> If students are the same, they come up with the same ideas.

>>> If there is no criticism (批判), bad ideas will be accepted without question.
否応無しに = without question.

社会の情勢が悪いほうへ傾いてしまう。。。日本の学生が批判精神をもたなければ、もっている国に追い越されてしまう。

Japan will be inferior to other countries.
(OR Japan will fall behind other countries.)

EDIT: If Japanese students are not independent thinkers (自立して考える人), , other countries will overtake it.

POINT: Change “inferior” to “fall behind” since we aren’t talking about values. “Inferior” has a strong nuance like one is better morally than the other side.

Fall behind is better since we are talking more about economic growth which is not directly related to morality.

EDIT: Japan may fall behind other countries.

Conclusion:

Japanese education should encourage independent thinking. If it doesn’t do that, Japan may succumb to other countries in many kinds of area.

EDIT:
Japanese education should encourage independent thinking. If it doesn't do that, Japan may fall behind in many kinds of areas including economic growth.

Such as = 例えば

経済成長などで遅れをとってしまう。

Nao said: “The view from Space Shuttle from the Earth…”

This should be:

“The view from the space shuttle of the Earth…”

‘space shuttle’ is singular and countable (plural: space shuttles) therefore it needs an article. Use ‘the’ because there was only one space shuttle in space recently (the Discovery).

‘from’ means starting at one point and going to another. ‘the view from the space shuttle…’ therefore is correct. However, we use ‘of’ because ‘the view’ belongs to the Earth! ‘of’ is used to show possession for non-living, non-moving objects.

Nao said: “I like communication to many people.”

This should be:

“I like to communicate with many people.”

When used with a verb, ‘like’ is always followed by ‘to.’

“I like to dance.”

“I like to eat ice cream.”

When used with a noun, ‘to’ is unnecessary.

“I like donuts.”

“I like baseball.”

Nao said: “I will try to challenge the experience to my friends…”

This should be:

“I will try to share the experience with my friends…”

‘share’ is the more appropriate word here. ‘challenge’ is very aggressive, and not something you do to friends. Also, ‘share’ occurs with the preposition ‘with.’

“I shared my ice cream with my sister.”

“The company won’t share any information with the government.”

Nao said: “My listening capability is weak.”

This should be:

“My listening skills are poor.”

In Japanese, we say 弱い for skills and abilities, but in English we do not use that word. Instead we use “good,” “bad,” or similar words.

“My ability to speak Japanese is bad.”

“He has poor typing skills.”

“She is good at speeches.”

Nao said: “My part is TV programs and DVD contents and sales.”

This should be:

“My responsibilities are TV programs and DVD contents and sales.”

When referring to your job in English, you should talk about your responsibilities, not your part or your role.

Nao said: “I am aggressive man, so I tried to go out from airport.”

This should be:

“I am an aggressive man, so I left the airport.”

Both ‘man’ and ‘airport’ are singular countable nouns, so they require articles (either ‘a’ or ‘the’). Because we are talking about one specific airport (San Francisco International Airport) in this conversation, ‘the’ is appropriate for airport. For ‘man,’ ‘a’ is more appropriate because you are talking about the kind of person you are, not a specific man.

‘tried to ’ means you attempted but were unsuccessful. In this case, that is not what you mean. You actually left the airport. Therefore, do not use ‘tried to’ in this sentence.

Nao said: “My ancient is maybe ninja.”

This should be:

“My ancient ancestors are maybe ninja.”

I think you just forgot the word ancestors. Ancestors are your family members who have been dead a long time. You must have more than one ancestor because every person has at least a father and a mother. Therefore ‘ancestors’ is plural in this sentence and we change the verb to match the subject.

It was nice meeting you Nao! Hope this lesson was helpful.
