エレンの感謝祭 Ellen's Thanksgiving 2008

The holiday season is a crazy time for many people. It’s filled with family gatherings, company holiday parties, shopping and travel. The unofficial start of the holiday season is Thanksgiving, a time for families to gather and give thanks for their blessings. Like many other families in the Bay Area, our family celebrates a traditional Thanksgiving meal with an ethnic twist.

This year we gathered at my cousin’s townhouse for Thanksgiving. We spent the morning at home preparing food to bring for dinner. When we arrived, we were served champagne and wine and started munching on appetizers. The centerpiece of the meal was an organic turkey from Whole Foods Market (http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/). We also had a green salad, potatoes and stuffing. Stuffing, also called dressing, is a mixture of cubed bread, onions, celery and other ingredients including liver, chestnuts, and raisins. This mixture is seasoned with salt and pepper, and stuffed into the turkey, which is then roasted for hours in the oven. After the turkey is done, the stuffing is removed and the turkey is carved. The drippings from the turkey are used to make gravy, which is poured over the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and anything you want to add it to. At our Thanksgiving meal, other appetizers and dishes included dates wrapped in bacon, salmon pillows (salmon and cream cheese mixture baked in puff pastry), California rolls, kimpira, persimmon/cucumber goma-ae and of course, white rice. For dessert we had sweet potato cheesecake, pumpkin pie, and a special chocolate cake to celebrate a birthday.

After dinner some of us played board games, another fun pastime. We stayed until after midnight playing Cranium WOW and Catch Phrase (search http://www.hasbro.com/ for game information). Unlike many Americans, we weren’t planning to brave the traditional after-Thanksgiving sales crowds on Friday so we were able to stay up late with no worries. It was another wonderful evening spent with family and friends.
